Heritage Hawk Stars After School Program

Heritage Academy, in partnership with East Side Neighborhood Services, offers and academically rich after school program that helps students get the help they need to succeed, drives individuals to discover new passions, and pushes all who attend to explore new worlds of information!

Program Offerings



GEMS & GISE, 6th - 8th, GEMS (Girls only) - M&W, GISE (Boys only) -T&TH
Instructor: GEMS - Ms. Jarvi, GISE - TBA

In this exciting robotics class students learn mechanical design, construction, programming, and teamwork skills. In pairs, using LEGO building elements, motors, and sensors, students build different robot prototypes and program them with a computer to move, react, and make sounds. Students will utilize their prototypes and programming to solve design challenges using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robotic System or the Lego EV3 Robotic System.

Students will participate in the 2018 Robotics FIRST Lego League Challenge: HYDRO DYNAMICSSM. The students will learn all about water- how to find, transport, use, or dispose of it. The culminating event for this class is the STEM-GEMS-GISE /Minneapolis FLL Regional Robotics Tournament on January 27, 2018.


Homework Lab, 6th -12th, M-Th

Everyday after school we will offer a homework lab staffed by U of M volunteers and Heritage staff. Homework lab is an opportunity for students to have an opportunity to finish their homework with the help of our staff, to ensure that they stay caught up.

Bucket Drumming, 6th - 12th, M

FEEL THE RHYTHM!!!! In Bucket Drumming, Students will learn the basics of percussion through bucket drumming. Last year the Heritage Hawk Drummers had the opportunity to perform at honor roll ceremonies, basketball games and more!

Spark-Y, 6th - 12th, M

In this urban agriculture course, Student will learn about the marvels of sustainable agricultural practices that focus on science, health, and social studies.

Debate, 6th - 8th, T&TH
Instructor - Mrs. Stein

Do you like to argue? We know you do...In Debate, students will learn to participate in competitive debates by learning the language of debate and by researching and developing arguments and delivering them in competition against each other as individuals and in teams.

History Day, 6th - 8th, T
Instructor - Mr. Skendi

National History Day is an inter-disciplinary research project for students in grades 6-12. Students will focus on Historical Inquiry to create History Projects that are rooted in Historical Inquiry. This year’s theme is conflict and compromise in history.

High School At Club, 9th-12th, T
Instructor - Ms. Jamesgaard

Help paint Heritage Academies first logo mural in the main hallway.  If you have an interest in learning how to paint murals, or just want to be a part of making this school our own through art, this club is for you.  Any interested high school student is encouraged to join.

Middle School Art Club, 6th - 12th, W
Instructor - Ms. Jamesgaard

Art club is for anyone who has an interest in art. This will be a choice based club where you can explore different mediums through the process of art making. Possible project choices could include, but are not limited to:  stop motion animation, tie dye tee shirt, shrink art, print making, sculpture, mobiles, duct tape construction, weaving, drawing, painting... and so much more.  Remember: Art club is for everyone, you do not need to be in art class this semester in order to be in art club!!!

Stock Market Game, 6th - 8th, W

In this course, students will apply Math, Economic, Literacy, and Entrepreneurship skills to picking stocks.

Finance Ed, 6th - 12th, W

In this financial education course, student volunteers from the University of Minnesota will come to Heritage to teach their finance curriculum to high school students through a series of lessons designed around fun games and activities. High School students will then be given the opportunity to teach the lessons they have learned to their fellow middle school students. High school students who participate will receive compensation for their time.

High school begins October 2nd. Middle School Begins November 13th

Girls Group, 9th-12th, TH
Instructor - Ms. Talia

Girls Group is a safe space for young women to have fun, unwind, share stories and make friends. Group is facilitated by a Registered Drama Therapist (Ms. Talia), which means that many of the activities involve self-exploration, drama/performance and art-making. Be brave, be bold- show up to Girls Group!
